Members of the UCPS CBRNE Center of Excellence and the UCPS SparkUp team successfully participated in the international workshop entitled “Cyberbiosecurity Frameworks Workshop”, held in Bucharest, Romania, from April 27 to 30, 2026. The workshop was organized by CRDF Global, while the training sessions were delivered by experts from GeneInfoSec.
Representing the University of Criminal Investigation and Police Studies were Prof. Dr. Zvonimir Ivanović and Prof. Dr. Ana Branković, both members of the UCPS SparkUp team and the UCPS CBRNE Center of Excellence. Their participation contributed to strengthening the University’s international cooperation and advancing expertise in the rapidly developing field of cyberbiosecurity.
The workshop focused on the fundamentals of cyberbiosecurity, governance frameworks, risk identification, threat mitigation strategies, and incident detection, response, and recovery protocols, with practical examples from real operational environments. Participants from several countries attended the event, exchanging experiences and best practices related to the protection of biological laboratories and the broader bioeconomy from cyber threats.
Throughout the four-day program, attendees participated in expert lectures, interactive group exercises, practical demonstrations, and a study visit to the National Institute of Public Health in Bucharest, where they were introduced to real biological workflows, systems, and cyber risk management procedures. Special attention was dedicated to threat modeling, risk assessment, data classification, and cyberbiosecurity preparedness and resilience.
The workshop concluded with a regional roundtable discussion on national challenges and priorities in cyberbiosecurity, gathering representatives from Serbia, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Romania. Following the final knowledge assessment and evaluation activities, participants were awarded certificates of completion.
Participation in this international workshop represents another important step in strengthening the capacities of the UCPS CBRNE Center of Excellence and the UCPS SparkUp team in the areas of cyberbiosecurity, resilience, and international scientific and professional cooperation.
