Members of the UCPS CBRNE Center of Excellence and the UCPS SparkUp team successfully participated in the international workshop entitled “Optimizing Research Security: Enhancing Institutional Biosecurity Practices”, held in Palić, Serbia, from May 8 to 10, 2026. The workshop was led by internationally recognized biosecurity experts Natasha K. Griffith and William (Bill) D. Arndt from Soter Bio.
Representing the University of Criminal Investigation and Police Studies was Prof. Dr. Ana Branković, member of the UCPS SparkUp team and Head of the UCPS CBRNE Center of Excellence. The workshop was also attended by young talents selected within the SparkUp project: Sara Petković, Master’s student in Forensic Engineering and Teaching Associate at UCPS; Danijela Ivanović, Master’s student in National Security; and Hannah Stein, final-year undergraduate student in Forensic Engineering.
The workshop focused on theoretical and practical approaches to research security and biosecurity, particularly in the context of Dual Use Research of Concern (DURC). Participants explored methodologies for risk assessment and risk management, identification of emerging technological threats, establishment of institutional oversight mechanisms, and the exchange of best practices at both local and regional levels.
During the three-day program, attendees participated in expert lectures, panel discussions, roundtables, tabletop exercises, and practical case-based activities designed to strengthen institutional biosecurity capacities. Key topics included DURC governance frameworks, mitigation strategies, institutional oversight responsibilities, monitoring and auditing mechanisms, as well as “Know-Your-Collaborator” and “Know-Your-Investor” approaches for research security management.
The workshop provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of modern approaches to research security optimization and institutional biosecurity practices. Through a combination of theoretical sessions and practical exercises, participants gained valuable knowledge and skills necessary for strengthening institutional resilience and advancing responsible research practices in the field of biosecurity.
Participation in this international workshop further demonstrates the commitment of the UCPS SparkUp team and the UCPS CBRNE Center of Excellence to advancing expertise, supporting young talents, and strengthening international cooperation in the areas of biosecurity, research security, and CBRNE risk management.
